Desert Sun Kachina

Watercolor and Acrylic on Paper - 18" x 22"

Another in my series of kachina dolls. As with Blue Sky Kachina, it is pictured as a connection or pathway between heaven and earth. The desert landscape down on the bottom gradually leads upward through an abstract pattern meant to symbolize spiritual enlightenment and attainment, up through the sun and stars to the top.

When I first painted Desert Sun Kachina, I was quite disappointed with it and considered it a failure. I moved it to the far end of my worktable and left it there for months. I almost destroyed it, but the more I looked at it, the more I started to understand that it was indeed what I intended it to be.
