Firebird Kachina

Watercolor and Acrylic on Paper - 20" x 26"

The Firebird Kachina Icon is the third in my series of Kachina Icons and unintentionally is the closest thing I have ever done to an M. C. Escher drawing. I was infatuated with metallic-based acrylics and used a lot of gold, silver and copper paint. Besides looking quite beautiful with the sheen and reflectivity changing as the light hits it from different angles, I used a lot of dimensional shading and perspective tricks so that you're not really sure which spatial dimension you're actually looking at.

This is another aspect of Kachinas that I wanted to get across - that they exist in multiple dimensions, straddling them, one foot in each.
