Icon of New Life
Watercolor and Acrylic on Paper - 24" x 32"
The Icon of New Life is my largest painting. I was inspired to do it on a trip to Monterey, California, to participate in a native American inipi (sweat lodge) ceremony. We passed a pasture where a mother cow was strolling across the grass followed by her two very young calves. The calves were romping and jumping out of sheer enjoyment, while running as fast as they could to keep up with their mother. I was quite moved by this simple, joyful scene that I thought about the miracle of new life and came home and started on the painting.
This painting has a lot of mathematical, cyclical detail and double-axis symmetry, reminiscent of the DNA helical molecule. |
