South Mountain Sunset Icon

Watercolor and Acrylic on Ceramic Tile - 8" x 8"

The inspiration for this icon came on a very warm, overcast Sunday when I was visiting a friend who lived in the foothills of South Mountain in Phoenix. The day had been kind of gloomy and claustrophobic as the sun was hidden behind a thick layer of clouds. Right before sunset, the sun emerged from the cloudbanks and flooded the landscape with a burnished orange-gold light. The contrast from the dull, colorless day with this explosion of color was spectacular. I don't ever remember South Mountain looking more beautiful.

I am very proud of this simple yet effective pattern, and consider it one of my best works.
