Return to Southwest USA Travel Page

In the middle 1970s two friends and myself embarked on a long drive one summers day and ended up in Monument Valley, near the Four Corners area. No big deal, except when you consider we started out from the Pittsburgh area. It was my first trip out West, and to me Monument Valley typified all that was beautiful and awe-inspiring about it. It is the West of photographs and dreams, of movies and of anyone who has ever seen a Western on television. When film directors wanted background scenery that was the essence of the West, they came here.
